You know, if Nick was actually trying to piss me off, they couldn’t possibly do a better job! I have been gritting my teeth as I watch the new show because it is very cute and entertaining, but I have a real problem with how they are portraying Michelangelo.

Yes, his character is energetic and youthful. Yes, he does tend to take things a little less seriously than his brothers. Yes, he is a prankster, a live wire, and a wise guy.

No, he is NOT stupid! :rage:

Do you hear me Nickelodeon? Michelangelo is not stupid. If you want to make me happy again, stop running those asinine commercials comparing Patrick to Mikey on the brainless meter. :(

The character of Michelangelo was not created to be stupid. He is not part of a tough ninja team who has had to survive their entire lives on their wits and talents just to be your path to a cheap laugh.

There will now be an entire generation of kiddos who will think that Michelangelo is an idiot and that if it weren’t for his brothers he’d be dead. Mikey is friggin’ SMART people; he is sharp, witty, intelligent, resourceful, insightful, quick, talented, agile, strong, and tough as a nail.

Please, please do me a favor Turtle fans – if you do nothing else, could you please read some of the original comics? Or watch a few episodes of the 2k3 version of the cartoon because it sticks more closely to the original characters from the comics.

Michelangelo is a beautiful character who does not deserve to be mutilated by Nickelodeon. He is my muse and I love him. I will defend his true character and personality with my last breath.   :tmnt3:

I'm sorry for being late at replying to this journal but....

THANK YOU!

I saw this video earlier this year. Nick decided to compare Patrick and Mikey in "the Battle of the Brains" m.youtube.com/watch?v=rfV2yu79… and it angered me.

I watched the season 2 premiere and I was disappointed with what they did to Mikey. His stupidity was absolutely annoying. It wasn't even funny. The "cottage cheese monster" and "talking cupcakes" lines were absolutely annoying. He seemed so stupid to the point of being useless. Because he didn't understand what was going on half the time. I don't understand how some fans find it funny and cute. Him being naive, innocent, and immature is funny and cute. That doesn't mean he's stupid.

It's a bummer that the show degraded Mikey's intelligence to the point of being cringe-worthy. Because I kind of like the character design of 2012 Mikey. I like that he's the shortest, has blue eyes, freckles, ect. Greg Cipes did a good job with his voice.. And there are moments where Mikey's innocence and naivety translates into something good. Like when he befriended Leatherhead. But other than that, his stupidity is too much.

I would thoroughly enjoy Mikey's ebullient behavior so much more if they didn't feel the need to explain it by having him be stupid.  A bubbly personality doesn't automatically mean that someone is a halfwit, which seems to be what Nick is trying to say.

Just when I see an episode where they seem to be allowing his character more growth, they slip back into the 'Mikey is slapstick humor' mold. I want a three-dimensional Michelangelo, not a character who has been relegated to the role of everyone's idea of a joke.

Thankyouthankyouthankyou!! So true, and I TOTALLY agree. He is and always has been my favorite of the four for the very reasons you've mentioned, and it honestly irritates the "shell" out of me that they have done this to him in the new show. This is NOT how he should be portrayed! He's NOT an idiot, not stupid or slow by ANY means. He's impish and a jokester and prankster, laid-back and fun-loving, to be sure, and lacks focus much of the time- but I think that's more because he truly DOES NOT CARE about being a ninja- he'd rather do his own thing and follow his own path, but feels obligated (or trapped) into the life and path that Splinter chose for them as kids.

I think Mikey might also be just a bit bored as well. It's like being in a class where you immediately understand what the teacher is trying to tell you to do, but then you have to sit there for an entire week listening to the teacher explain the same thing over and over to the other kids.  Mikey is incredibly gifted and having to wait for his brothers to perfect a move probably bores him to tears.

True dat! That, and his short attention-span probably cause much mind-wandering, too, LOL! But I think the boredom might also be caused in part by that very lack of interest. He's gifted athletically, and knows it, but feels little desire to develop the skills that Splinter- and Leo- seem to value so highly. He just doesn't see the point to it, because his mind and heart are on other things. I've always seen him as the LEAST concerned with training and practicing for htat very reason. He's a dreamer, creative and idealistic. All traits which have no place in the strict discipline and regimented life they live. And I think he feels constrained by that life, forced by circumstance into being something he truly cares little for. But that's just my two coppers.

This is exactly why I say that Leo's true opposite is Mikey, not Raph. Raph may argue about certain decisions, but he has the same drive that Leo has, the same desire to be the best, the same goal to protect the family and be a warrior above all else. Where Leo is very traditional, Mikey is more Americanized. Where Leo spends hours practicing, Mikey spends them playing video games. It is enormously fascinating!

well someone had too say it and it really irks me too cause *rant start* originally mikey is the most talented of the turtle (excepted for his lack of focus) and it really bugs me too that raph is ALWAYS angry or that leo has no idea what his doing or... or *sigh* ya know what I just don't like how ANY of them are depicted in the nick version. And it bugs me even more that the storys are actually good!!!*rant end*

Well I think I've said all I have to say hehe *sweat drop*.

but good point!

I read somewhere in all the Nick literature on the TMNT that 2k12 Master Splinter considers Mikey to be the most talented of his sons. So if they say it on their website and fan forums, why don't they show it in the cartoon itself? It is canon for Mikey to be the most agile and gifted of the brothers, for him to have incredible insight and massive amounts of skill. He is not a 'B' team turtle - if anything he would be running circles around his brothers. *takes a deep cleansing breath*

Yeah I have too! And the A/B team thing is so demeaning cause I mean there is the fact that mikey is the most agile and gifted but also donnie is defiantly the smartest but also calmest/level headed (except when itvcomes to april) of all of them!! (No mater how hard leo tries). And I almost get the feeling that nick thinks that leo isn't the best choice for leader. Although that might just be me.

Like some think Raph is stupid..
Yes, they are using Mikey. They are all laughing at him and making fun of him and.. *sigh* I have never liked bullying. But maybe they will grow and become better.. or it's just my wishful thinking. (I do think some things are better in this version, some important characters were just too flat in 2k3. Like April.. She had some good moments but still a flat character. And I didn't like how they were great fighters in one episode and not so great in the next.. too much inconsistency)

You write the turtles wonderfully *Hummerhouse  They all get a heart and a mind, and they can use both ^_^ Yay!

I could rant on the subject of how Raph is always made out to be a brute who never thinks anything through and that isn't true either. Humor is a great thing, but not at the expense of making a character stupid in order to get a laugh. I want to see character growth more than anything, which means I want them all to get better and cut out the inconsistencies.

Thank you! I think if each of them didn't have both a heart and a mind they'd be dead - that's just logic.

Would be wonderful to see them all at their best :) Not making one char less just to make another shine.
I guess they think children needs it? A stupid one or many of them to.. be able to outsmart them?? And at the same time they show it's really ok to bully someone who is less brilliant.. But they did kind of have that problem in 2k3 too (and before). I mean when they tell Mikey he's less smart and don't think and all that, I would hate it if someone treated me like that! But in the new one it is so true, Mikey don't even argue with them... sad.
They had this episode that was supposed to show that Mikey is needed or something, but they kept him stupid and no real emotions in there. Like he's a hollow character. I wish they showed some deep emotions and reactions. Mikey may seem stupid but he isn't, and I get angry every time someone treats him badly just because (not when he "deserves it" hehe the prankster..)

I think that's the wrong message to send to kids, making characters stupid or incapable of concentrating during life or death situations. I mean really, three of the turtles understand the plan they're about to implement and Mikey can't remember because his mind is full of other stuff? How'd he ever learn to be a ninja?

Guess that's where the kids imagination comes into play ;) We grown-ups need logic, they just need entertainment.
I grew up with the 87 version and they were totally silly. But I didn't see them that way as a kid. Ofc they had their serious moments too.. It's strange, I have all these memories of cool and serious ninja turtles, and then I watched some old episodes some months ago and I was like :S what?? How could I NOT remember they were that silly??? I don't know how a kid's mind work but they see things differently..

Rather than let genuine humor draw audience laughs, they resort to cheap gags.  There are plenty of funny moments that don't require their resorting to stupidity and pratfalls, but I guess Nick isn't sophisticated enough to understand that. Or maybe they are just lazy.

Lazy and unsophisticated I'm guessing lol then again Nick has always been the channel I never really liked with most of their stupid shows that have good storylines but they ruin it with the cheap digs and unplotted character development. At least the quit playing the Mikey/Patrick commercial >_< so hopefully they'll give him more shine like Parasitica

It's not that Mikey's stupid in the 2k3 series he jokes around to lighten the mood. Mikey is the what keeps the team together. Without him I think Leo and Raph would have killed eachother long ago. Mikey's also the onl one who can get Don out of his room....

T^T i can't say more about mikey to what you said..he is my favorite charactar and and .. :( i hope they do fix this in the upcoming episodes..

and poor donnie.. i always had a picture of donnie as the sweet level-headed one.. but now he's more dorky then ever.. and dosn't have that sweet impression to him anymore.. at least for me it feels like that :(

also the episode 'mousers attack' .. what's with the roles! they pointed that mike and don are the side-kicks to leo and raph.. for me they all had the same role even if leo was the leader.. don and mike are not side-kicks! it just didn't feel right..

also april.. 'sigh' i don't like her being a teenager like the guys.. she was way more cooler when she was older.. like a big sister and all :) now she's .. she's.. a teenager!!!!!.. not like the cool older april that go around helping the guys by hacking a system or driving a hilocopter or even letting them stay in her apartment if there was a foot clan wondering the sewers looking for the turtles.. ahh good old april.. but i guess i'll give this one a chance .. though i don't like the idea of donnie having a stupid crush on her .. :|

p.s. sorry for any spelling mistakes

There are so many things that perturb me about the characterizations in the new show. If they were small changes I probably wouldn't mind, but come on! How could Mikey be stupid and still be alive? That's ridiculous. Also, they are perpetuating the idiotic idea started by the 2007 movie that Don and Mikey are less important to the team than Leo and Raph. That couldn't be farther from the truth; both Don and Mikey are great fighters as well as smart ones. Mikey doesn't run screaming from a fight; in fact he has a tendency to egg his brothers towards battles when he feels like they need to prove something. Sure he screeches when he gets surprised, that's only because he's way more vocal than his brothers.

And what they've done to Donatello. He is witty and sarcastic, gentle and caring. He is not a snarky, blow hard, know-it-all. He certainly wouldn't trip over his own tongue if he met a girl he liked - there were certainly plenty of girls in the 2k3 series who related to him quite easily. And I too prefer the older sister vibe of the previous April.

*sigh* I'll probably watch the show 'cause I need my turtle fix, but I'm not going to be rushing to the TV to see it.

The brainless gag is what you do when you're going for a cheap laugh and is usually done when a show isn't very good. Maybe they should put some effort into improving the shows plot lines and character development.

I was taking it until they started running those commercials, then I just lost it. It is uber infuriating to try to get people to see what an incredible character Mikey truly is and then have Nick just twist his personality all out of shape. It was bad enough they minimalized his importance in the 2k7 movie, but now Nick is making it look as though he isn't necessary at all. grrrr......

Personally, i havent seen those commercials, cause we dont have Nick, i watch the show on the net, but im seriously thinking about looking them up, cause i wanna see what this shit is all about.
I really enjoyed the 2k7 movie, but i felt that both Mikey and Donnie were overseen and "ignored," just focusing on the LeoxRaph fight. Really annoying, but at least they didnt make him look stupid or reckless, which ive noticed theyve done ALOT in the Nick-series. They dont just ignore him, but as you said, completely mess up his awesome personality.
He was a fun-loving prankster, and often showed a creativity and understanding his brothers always lacked. He wasnt a genious like Donnie, but definently very clever in all other ways, especially dealing with people. I would call him a "social genious" :D he also had a lot of talents and abilities, and are the turtle with the most potential and skill in Ninjitsu. I also believe him to have his "wise-guy" image just as a facade, his way of dealing with ditress and problems, and that could be considered very smart! he cheered up his bros and made many situations less hard to solve. Seriously, without him, the team would fall apart. And his bros know this! Sometimes they forget, but deep inside, they could NEVER go on without him. So, i would like this new generation to know him as well, as the witty genious he really is.
Not as a stupid hold-back.

But when they did, they acknowledged his intelligence. In 'Grudge Match' Leo even told Mikey that he had enormous faith in Mikey's abilities. They teased him because he was the least likely to be down or to take things too seriously, but they all had great faith in him.

I too have seen fanfics that have done that and to be honest, I'll stop reading the story because it shows such poor understanding of character. I too have played with making him a bit 'innocent' in a couple of giftfics - but I'll warn that he's 'OOC' or that it's AU. And as much as I like to explore psychosis and such, I try to maintain the character's basic personality, so I have never made Mikey stupid. That couldn't be more off base and I'd rather Nick had introduced a new character to the show if they felt they needed someone to fill the brainless shoes.
